The whole story Voters in state senate District 30 have a choice in Tuesday’s Democratic primary on who their state senator should be. Sen. Maggie Glover, who has represented the district since 1992, is facing opposition from Florence businessman Tim Norwood and Marion County’s Kent Williams. The biggest issue in this campaign is jobs and if the state senator is in a position to help bring jobs to the district. Glover says her belief is that the senator is in Columbia to vote on legislation that will help the district whether it be education, health care, or jobs. Williams and Norwood each feel the state senator should also play a bigger part in the economic development. We have praised Glover in the past for her strong stands on education funding and especially her leadership against factory hog farms in our area. And Williams is a strong candidate with lots of ties to the community and makes a big point of bringing the district together. All three candidates realize the importance education plays and the need to make sure the rural school districts get proper funding. They will all be proponents for I-73 construction. But we believe that Norwood gives all residents of this district the best chance to help because of his energy, creativity and drive. This area of our state, portions of Florence, Dillon and Marlboro counties and all of Marion county faces big challenges. Unemployment, health care, education and infrastructure needs are huge. Norwood not only talks about helping, but what we like is that he has specific plans such as a state park, a new airport, a museum in Mullins and ways to improve infrastructure. Some might think the ideas are a little “far out,” but we like the way he has articulated his ideas. He is ready to get to work. The residents of this area need somebody who will take Norwood’s past experience in the private sector and use his creativity and energy to help not only the district but all of this area.
