Norwood Supports Bringing I-73 to Pee Dee

“I will fight to bring Interstate 73 to South Carolina, making sure it enters the state in Marlboro County near Wallace and is located in Marion County along Highways 38 and 501, where it can stimulate economic growth,” Norwood, who has been active in the I-73 coalition, said. “I fully support SC DOT’s efforts to secure funding for the initial stages of I-73 in the upcoming federal budget,” he continued.

I-73 in the Pee Dee
Interstate 73, first planned in 1991, is designed to be constructed from Michigan to South Carolina, though there is still some question as to which areas in South Carolina will be directly impacted by the interstate.

If Interstate 73 were built to travel through the Pee Dee, more specifically through Marion County, the job opportunities it could create would be numerous.

Interstate Benefits
In South Carolina, Interstate 73 is slated to terminate at US 17 in Myrtle Beach. Interstate 73 could meet a proposed eastern extension of Interstate 95 and Highway 38 near Latta.

Local supporters of Interstate 73 hope the highway will indeed travel through Marion, thus easing traffic on existing state roads and offering a major route for tourists headed toward Myrtle Beach, which supports one of South Carolina’s biggest industries, tourism.

“We in the Pee Dee are aware that there are alternative routes for I-73 to travel through in South Carolina, and we have to fight for our position in order to benefit from the interstate. In the Pee Dee, I-73 is very necessary. It’s necessary immediately.”

—BRUCE WALTERS, FORMER MANAGER OF ARVIN MERITOR INDUSTRIAL PLANT

“I support I-73 fully,” said Bruce Walters, former manager of Arvin Meritor industrial plant. “Transportation is crucial to not only new industrial development, but also for the tourism industry.”

An interstate near the national attraction could help ensure visitors continue to flock to Myrtle Beach instead of looking elsewhere for a more convenient vacation, Walters said.

“In regard to the industry of the Pee Dee, I-73 is especially necessary for Myrtle Beach, which has grown faster than the infrastructure that’s there to support it,” Walters continued. “We in the Pee Dee are aware that there are alternative routes for I-73 to travel through in South Carolina, and we have to fight for our position in order to benefit from the interstate,” Walters continued. “In the Pee Dee, I-73 is very necessary. It’s necessary immediately.”
